What is Accreditation?
Accreditation is an indicator of educational quality.
Accrediting agencies are independent organizations that set standards for educational quality. An accredited institution or program continually demonstrates that it meets these standards. Additionally, institutions that are accredited by an agency recognized by the United States Department of Education are able to provide federal student financial aid (Title IV).
Questions regarding accreditation should be directed to Adam Bulizak, Dean, Accreditation and Compliance. Questions regarding Title IV eligibility or administration should be directed to Dr. Gregory Guzmán, Vice President of Financial Aid Services and Government Relations.
Institutional Accreditation
Hondros College of Nursing is institutionally accredited by the Accrediting Bureau of Health Education Schools (ABHES). The Accrediting Bureau of Health Education Schools is recognized by the United States Department of Education.
There are two types of institutional accreditation: national accreditation, and regional accreditation. Institutions that are regionally accredited tend to emphasize academic research rather than specific student learning outcomes. Institutions that are nationally accredited tend to focus on student learning outcomes, like retention, licensure pass rates, and career placement. Nationally accredited institutions predominantly offer programs that prepare students to enter a specific career. ABHES is a health education-focused national accreditor, which aligns with Hondros College of Nursing’s mission to prepare students for future nursing careers.
Disclosure of Program Specific Warnings
On February 16, 2023, the Accrediting Bureau of Health Education Schools (“ABHES”) notified Hondros College of Nursing (“the College”) that ABHES has placed four locations of the College’s Practical Nursing diploma program on Program Specific Warning because of the programs’ retention rates: Fairborn, OH Non-Main Campus; Independence, OH Non-Main Campus; West Chester, OH Non-Main Campus; and Westerville, OH Main Campus. As a result of these Program Specific Warnings, the College is required to prepare Teach-Out Plans for the Practical Nursing programs at each of these campuses.
The College also is required to submit a response to ABHES in May 2023 regarding its action plan and progress toward achieving compliance with ABHES requirements. ABHES will review the College’s submission at its July 2023 meeting and assess the College’s progress toward attaining compliance. Absent a good cause extension, failure to attain compliance with ABHES requirements by the July 2023 meeting may result in additional action by ABHES, such as limiting or suspending new program enrollments or withdrawing approval for the Practical Nursing program at the relevant campuses. If ABHES were to withdraw approval, the College would teach-out the program for current students and help such students to complete their programs, which the College has explained in the Teach-Out Plan provided to ABHES.
The College is working to address ABHES requirements with respect to the Program Specific Warnings. For additional information, please contact [email protected].
