Military Tuition Assistance

Return of Unearned TA
Military Tuition Assistance (TA) is awarded to a student under the assumption that the student will attend school for the entire period for which the assistance is awarded. When a student withdraws, the student may no longer be eligible for the full amount of TA funds originally awarded.
To comply with the new Department of Defense policy, Hondros College of Nursing will return any unearned TA funds on a proportional basis through at least the 60% portion of the period for which the funds were provided. TA funds are earned proportionally during an enrollment period, with unearned funds returned based upon when a student stops attending.
If a service member stops attending due to a military service obligation, Hondros College of Nursing will work with the affected service member to identify solutions that will not result in a student debt for the returned portion.
Calculation
When a student withdraws from a program, the last date of attendance (LDA) will be used in the TA return calculation. The LDA will be determined by Hondros College of Nursing by reviewing the last date of activity within the term. For online courses, Hondros College of Nursing will determine LDA based on the last date a student made a contribution to a class or submitted an assignment.
Once LDA has been determined, Hondros College of Nursing will recalculate your TA eligibility based on the following formula:
Number of days completed / Total days in the term (start to end date) = percent earned
The total TA award will be multiplied by the percent earned. Any balance over the percent earned will be returned to the Military TA program.
Examples:
- 17 days completed/ 75 Total days in the term =22.7% (TA funds would need to be returned.)
- 46 days completed/ 75 Total days in the term = 61.3% (No TA funds would need to be returned.)
Return of funds
Using the formula above, Hondros College of Nursing will be required to return some or all of the TA awarded to service members that did not complete at least 60% of each term. This may possibly create a balance on your Hondros College of Nursing student account.
